Social Media in Advertising

There is no denying the hype of social media all over the world. From the birth of Friendsters, Multiply, YouTube and etc up to the reign of Facebook and Twitter. So what’s with social media and why is everyone so in to it? Well I think the basic foundation of it is simple. If you want a certain group or society to work perfectly, you need to create relationship and commonalities. Having said that, it all comes down to communication; the ability to share and learn something new from other individual. For me that’s what social media offers to the people and that’s why it became an instant hit.

Having all the big buzz about social media, it became a great place to advertise. Since social media has a personal approach to the people using it, companies can take this as an advantage to send out their marketing message. Advertising in social media has been a hit specially in YouTube and Facebook. Creating viral videos, photos and games for marketing and branding purposes.  Even big names in the advertising world created a team specially for this new growing medium. Like Ogilvy and Mather where they launched Social @ Ogilvy. A team of Social Media experts ready to integrate the traditional medium to social media for Ogilvy and Mather’s ad campaigns.

This is actually a smart move for advertising agencies because social media is here to stay. The challenging thing about this medium is that it continues to evolve everyday. New social network booms and creates impression capable enough to build social communities. Some new apps and sites are introduce to help with social media stats. The list goes on and personally as a social media manager, I advise to continuously update yourself. The limits are boundless with this new technology but only the basic principles of advertising can be a great thing to have to adopt and market in this medium.
