Just this morning, I saw an inspiring post in my Facebook newsfeed. It’s a story about a senior Labrador dog who had walked 30 miles back to its previous family and was rejected. This story resonated online buzz by the help of social media and other news websites. Luckily for Ma Kettle (the Labrador) story reached the person that will matter the most in her life. Florida heiress, Helen Rosburg, also known as the author Helen Rich reach out to Chautauqua County Animal Shelter in Sedan, Kansas through her personal assistant and adopted Ma. The lovely Labrador, now named Lady was picked up by Helen Rich’s assistant and was flew in to Florida through a private plane.  She’ll live in an 11,000 square foot home on 100-odd acres, with a whole menagerie of furry rescue companions.

This only shows that business is not all about money. It’s also important to look back and be grateful of the people who had been part of your success. Also, I personally love companies who spent their marketing money pushing a certain cause or spreading goodness in their community. There is no denying that a little heartwarming gesture can surely go a long way. As of today (July 31, 2014) this “ATM Automated Thanking Machine” YouTube clip had already reached 2,969,409 views after being posted last July 24, 2014. This only shows that promoting kindness and gratitude will never be left unnoticed.

McDonalds and Coca Cola #BETTERTOGETHER Ad Campaign

McDonald’s Philippines together with Coca-Cola recently launched a new ad campaign promoting real life connection between family, loveones and friends. As we all know Social Media has been a very important factor in everyone’s life nowadays regardless if you’re young or old. It has been a platform for people to stay connected to one another and get the latest updates in each other’s life. But let’s not forget the importance of being actually together with your family, friends and loveones. That  feeling you get when you hear a good laugh over a silly joke, take wacky photos and to be able to feel one’s presence through simple gestures. Though this is an era where internet and social media had been dominant, let’s not forgot the classic hangouts.

So this is why I super love the concept of the #BETTERTOGETHER ad campaign from McDonalds and Coca Cola because they manage to promote this classic value of real life connection using the concept of social media. Even their launch was very innovative and appealing. Using props and icons from our favorite social networks and transforming it to actual life size props.

Gotta Love Chevy’s 2014 Commercial “Maddie”

Earlier while eating breakfast, Chevy’s 2014 Commercial entitle MADDIE was feature in the news. It made me stop and watch because the host describe it as a heartwarming story about a girl and her dog. Since I have 100% fondness over mans best friend, I focus on this new commercial by Chevrolet. It will show you a journey of a precious friendship that lasted through the test of time.

The scene started in the present where the woman needed to put her best friend dog to sleep at the Vet. Then it was followed by video clips going backward up to the day she got the little puppy and name her Maddie. At the last part of this video shows the ad’s copy “A bestfriend for life’s journey.”

Watching this won’t make you feel that this is an ad for a car brand. But personally, I like that it gives you that feeling. Ever since my college years, I was never a fan of commercialized ads. Though I do understand that every elements of the ad was always based on the target audience and the message it wants to convey. So having that thought  made me appreciate this ad more. It gives the brand an image of  having a huge heart that wants to be a part of their consumer’s daily life. Showing a brand that can be reliable and can be a great companion in all your life’s journey. Choosing to touch the heart of millions over selling their automotive excellence is really admirable. Because as a consumer that has a brief  background in advertising, you’ll want an ad that will be remembered and loved by your audience. Though the basic principle of adverting is it’s a creative idea that sells but emphasizing on the “CREATIVE IDEA” made the field advertising different from being a salesman. Because in this field, it’ll give you “Creative Freedom” to market your product and brand without doing what a salesman should do.

Well I hope you enjoyed this new Chevy ad  as much as I did. If you are a dog lover, it will be impossible for you not to love this one. The host in the news describe it as something too sad for a car commercial but for me I find it to have the equal elements of life itself. Life gets really tough and you will have good and bad days. But when all thing is said and done, at the end of the day it’s always better to have a bestfriend in your life’s journey.

Unique PSA | Dumb Ways to Valentines

Are you aware of this Public Service Announcement in Australia’s Metro? Well if not this is a must see for everyone! I actually first saw this during my first week of stay in Sydney last October 2012 and it’s really hard to ignore. They gave PSA a unique twist by sending a serious message of safety in a very amusing manner. This is a fresh take on the usual seriousness of PSA brings and just showing the literal ways that could happen if you don’t prioritize safety. Also the jingle of Dumb Ways to Die is very appealing and I  caught myself singing it over and over.

I took a break from the digital world and focus on some domestic tasks. Now that I’m getting ready to get back on board again I was caught in a moment thinking on what steps to consider if I want to host my own digital marketing campaign nowadays? I stood firm with my opinion that every digital campaign should be specifically tailored for the brand or product’s marketing needs and goals. But I guess there can be a basic step by step procedure you can follow when you want to brainstorm on that next big idea for your client’s marketing campaign.  So I decided to make my own list; a guide that can help newbies have a clearer direction on where to start.

1. Decide on how you want to position your brand online. A good marketer knows their brand persona and able to pin point the best marketing strategy to go for when pushing their brand. This principle still applied to digital marketing, where you must be able to have a clear grasp of who your brand should be.  By then you’ll be able to come up with a goal where your marketing campaign will be tailored from.

2. Do your RESEARCH. A great marketing idea is born out of a strong brand/consumer research. If you want to push your brand marketing online you must be aware on how to effectively approach your target audience. Research on their “online behavior” since each market has different activities when they browse the internet. Find out what website do they visit, during when do they go online, what are the things that can make them open your link/post and etc. This research can help you better decide on the type of tone you’ll use for your marketing campaign and what channels to tap.

3. Finalize on  what type of digital marketing campaign to use. Now that you know your brand and you’ve done your research it should help you decide on what type of digital marketing campaign will work well for your client/brand. Like traditional advertising, Digital Marketing also has a lot of channels and medium to choose from. Blogging, Social Media, Adwords, Online Contest, Viral Marketing and etc. It’s really up to you to decide which of these will work best for your marketing campaign goal. Also you can back up your digital marketing campaign with some traditional advertising for better result. But keep in mind to follow the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) guideline. Great marketing campaign are most of the time the simplest one.

4. Produce a strong promotional plan for your campaignYou’ll want to create a buzz on your launch and also milk your marketing campaign into it’s very last drop. That’s why I personally think that you should plan everything ahead. Many would agree with me when I say that one of the greatest fear of any marketers is to see their campaign fail. That’s why I think Pre-promotion is very important since your client expects high turnover during your campaign launch. Also you should be able to sustained the hype during and after your marketing campaign. A great digital campaign is useless if only few are aware about it.

5. Measure your campaigns success. After everything is said and done your client would want to see if your digital marketing campaign is worth it. Make sure to have a clear list of your marketing goal and analyze if you achieved it after your campaign’s duration. You can use online tools to measure your viral success or produce your own guidelines based on your goals.

After doing your digital marketing campaign make sure to learn from it. Whether if it’s a success or an epic fail the only thing you’ll get out of it is a new experience. I had this employer 4 years ago where he let us conceptualize and run our own digital marketing campaign. During success and failures he always makes sure that we learn something new from that experience to make sure to do better next time. Now I realized how that shaped me and how he invested for his employees to learn on hand.

I’m sure there are other guidelines to follow and I’m open for suggestions too. But right now this is my way of sharing what I’ve learned to all the newbies out there who wants to pursue digital marketing as a profession.

Naughty or Nice? | Kmart Christmas Commercial 2013 – Show Your Joe Boxer

Kmart newly released viral video got the netizens gushing over this “naughty or nice” concept introducing Joe Boxer’s designs for the holiday season. Featuring six gorgeous male models wearing tuxedo as their top and boxer shorts at the bottom. As they maintain their serious facial expressions while ringing the bells in the tune of a famous Christmas song JINGLE BELLS. I personally think that this is just a harmless humor from its creator giving the Holiday season an extra laugh.

There have been some backlashes towards this new Christmas viral video but I think people just needs to have a little humor sometimes. Looking back on some underwear video advertisements, I find this one harmless. Also people should take in to consideration that the video’s target market is more on the adult age so an extra naughtiness is a must.

But at the end of the day we are all entitled to our own opinion. As any PR personnel will say, “There’s no such thing as bad publicity”. Good or bad still at the end of the day people are checking it out. Social Media Raising Awareness for Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) Victims

Last November 8, 2013, Philippines faced one of the strongest storms that ever hit land. The Filipino people were warned about this coming typhoon using the word “delubyo” to describe how strong it will be.  Today is the 10th day since the storm hit my country and you still see in the news how big are the damages Visayas region got from it. Communication was one of the challenges the victims and their family had to face. It was a torture for most not to know if their loveones had survived the devastation.

The world is one with us as we watched the updates about the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. CNN reporter such as Anderson Cooper had been active in the field of Tacloban (one of the badly hit cities in Visayas Region) and even updates everyone through his social media accounts. He showed the world how Filipinos had survived the storm and showcasing the attitude that we will never give up. Also I personally believe that this coverage had raised awareness and evoke people all over the world to offer our little yet strong country a helping hand.

I also salute the efforts of our local network giants that have been actively updating us and encouraging people to help out even in our own simple ways. ABS-CBN had come up with this awesome idea to sell shirts and promote positivity to all Yolanda victims coining the copy “Tulong na, Tabang na, Tayo na”, giving all the proceeds to Yolanda victims. Celebrities of the Kapamilya network got to perform last weekend for a charity concert in line with the “Tulong na, Tabang na, Tayo na” campaign with a full packed Araneta.

As you go through Social Media you’ll see the different efforts from private individuals showing their support to all the Typhoon Yolanda’s victims. Inspirational banners, news updates, words of encouragements, tips on how to donate and many other stuffs to raise more awareness on how to help out.

Lastly, Social Media served as watch dogs to make sure that our government is doing their job. I think if you live in the Philippines you know how corruption had made our people suffer. Now Filipinos are actively sending their sentiments on how our government is handling the situation. I personally think that Social Media gave the people a big favor by giving them the power to express their opinion. Also to continuously remind the government officials to do their job well.

It will take months before the people can fully recover from this devastation but one thing’s for sure is that we will never give up. Philippines is a strong country regardless of all its flaws. Filipino people have the biggest heart that promotes a “can do” attitude. We live our life with a smile each day no matter how big our problems are. I will always be a proud Filipino even we are not an abundant country still our culture and values is world class.

Social Media Fights Animal Cruelty

Social Media can be anything and last September it proves everyone how it can be used for something positive. The Filipino netizens was all troubled after seeing a video of a puppy that was being abused to death by 3 women. It was actually heart breaking to hear the poor creature cried for help, even my 2 dogs was not at ease when they heard it in the background. As an individual who loves animals dearly, I hated the 3 women in the video. But most of all, I feel super sad on how our society had become. I can’t focus while working after I got the glimpse of that clip and didn’t have the heart to finish it. This kind of scenario makes no sense, why do some people abuse animals that way and be proud of it.

Many netizens did cry out for help and tapped animal organizations regarding this abuse. Even the local news channels where tag and people kept on reporting to PETA or PAWS. It actually warms my heart seeing how Filipino people reacted to this issue and to know that I’m not alone with this fight to give animals a better well-being. Though I may not be a volunteer yet, I try to make sure to start it with my 2 dogs at home. Because I believe that animals has the right to live freely and gain equal respect.

After creating a big social buzz regarding this animal abuse issue, it was reported on that same day to local TV news. According to the report, this type of video is called “Crush Video” and was used for sexual pleasure for some freaks out there. Sorry for the term “freak” though they say it’s a mental illness, I just can’t look pass how horrible this people are.

Well to make the long story short, this is just my way of sharing this Social Media story to the world. On how Social Media played a role on fighting animal cruelty and raising awareness to such issue. As a person working in the field of Social Media, I know many had look down to this medium. But let’s not look pass on some of the positive things that it brought us. 15 years ago, communication was limited and social awareness was low. But now we are just all one click away to finding out more about our society and actually sharing our own stand or opinion.

Lastly, though this talks about the video clip about the dog abuse, I chose not to attached it here in this blog post. Because I feel strongly against it and refuse to see it again. I prefer to share a letter from  PAWS requesting for further investigation regarding the said video. Showing immediate action for the said issue.
